Paid Members gmoney Posted March 31, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) I'm working my way through the Columbo Cigar Boxset. Every episode. Only up to season 3 at the moment. Anyone else own this? Â I don't own it, but every episode before the revival I've ever seen is great. Especially rewarding is if you watch each show from the position of rooting for the villain, and then treat the show as an ever more claustrophobic horror, where the incompetent smelly investigator begins to stalk your man, leading to confession or humiliation. Â I'm nowhere near the revival yet (Season 8 onwards) but there are some good episodes in that section as well. Harder to come across them but there are some nuggets there. The last episode I finished was the Johnny Cash episode which is wonderful seeing Peter Falk and Johnny Cash acting together. To use wrestling terms, Falk does a wonderful job carrying Cash. Johnny himself is great in it too. The best villain so far is Jack Cassidy. Â What's the preferred Columbo type killer then. The total bastard or the sympathetic 'I understand why you did it' killer? Richie Freebird
Just had my first stab at a silent film with Le Voyage dans la lune (a trip to the moon) from 1902. I didn
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted March 31, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2012 It genuinely amazes me that it was made in 1902. I mean, you are talking a whole quarter of a century before technology advanced to a point where speech was a part of cinema, and yet despite that they were still able to come up with a film of this amazing level of sophistication. I don't think I could ever fail to be amazed by it. It has been beautifully preserved, too, a real credit to everyone involved down the years. Paid Members Halitosis Romantic Posted March 31, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2012 Richie, have you ever seen any Jose Mojica Marins? I think you'd enjoy his stuff; I'd say to start with At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted March 31, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2012 I've heard a lot about those Coffin Joe films, RoFu. What would you compare them to, I've never actually seen one?
ukfan11
Watched Womb last night which stars Matt Smith and Eva Green, which I believe is being released soon in the UK as Clone. Strange film in parts, but really interesting and kept me hooked. Was half expecting a twist ending that started the cycle again, but they didn't go that route so that was good. What would you compare them to, I've never actually seen one? Â For the main Coffin Joe movies, I wouldn't really know what to say. They're a bit like a Herschell Gordon Lewis with a talent for more than just promotion, mingled up with a really misanthropic and chauvanistic aura. They're also weirdly like some of Fulci's best, in that anything can happen spatially and temporaly - kind of like The Beyond. Â Of course, plenty of his later stuff is also twisted up porn, but those aren't the most popular.

Paid Members niff Posted April 1, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 1, 2012 Watched the Steve Carrell movie Crazy Stupid Love and it was better than I thought. Some real laugh out loud moments which is hard to come by in those romantic comedy with bit of drama thrown in films of late. Can't see the fuss about Ryan Gosling because his acting is a little wooden.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted April 2, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 2, 2012 I watched Hall Pass last night. It wasn't bad and wasn't great. Best bit was definitely ex-Neighbours girl Nicky Whelan getting them out. Though from a google image search, it appears she's not particularly shy. Â Funny seeing Owen Wilson play someone his actual age. One of those films that is quite odd in that it wants to be The Hangover but is actually a chick flick. Paid Members Dead Mike Posted April 2, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted April 2, 2012 (edited) Surviving The Game - Mentioned this a week or so ago & spotted on (the US) Netflix this weekend so thought I'd revisit it & see if I still enjoyed it as much as I did when I was 15/16 years old? In short, Yes. It's not aged thatwell & it's far from being hailed as a classic actioner but it's definitely in the Judgement Night/Trespass school of underrated 90's gems. It's essentially Hard Target with a smaller budget & Ice-T in the lead role but (for me anyway) this is a much more of a straight up affair. There's no love interest in this, no pensioner on horseback to rescue Ice. Just one bad ass, gangsta rapper against a horde of rich huntsmen, whom led by Rutger Hauer include Charles S Dutton, Gary Busey, John C McGinley & F Murray Abraham (which pisses all over Lance Henrikson & Arnold Vosloo! A different class of DTV thesp). The budget constraints hinder it a little but it's directed by Ernest Dickerson who does frenetic action brilliantly, he directed the finale of 'The Walking Dead' as well as loads of episodes of The Shield & 90's hiphop classic 'Juice'. If you missed this the first time round & you've got a spare 90 minutes you could do far worse. Edited April 2, 2012 by Dead Mike
