The WWE Discussion Thread

A Screen Up

Recommended Posts

At first sight this thread may be the type you guess will die sideways on its arse. I'm hoping for the contrary.

I'm sure I aren't the only person on here who only watches WWE these days. I am not a fan of the TNA product and very rarely have the time to watch any independent or foreign wrestling. I watch old footage when I can but there are other threads on here to discuss it if I wish.

This isn't to replace the PPV threads, or even the Raw and Smackdown ones. It's just a place to discuss the current going on's in the WWE Universe without having to trawl through pages of ROH, TNA and Old School discussion to get to something that is regarding the current WWE product. (That is not a knock on ROH, TNA or old school discussion by the way).

I'm hoping there are enough other posters on here who sometimes solely wish to discuss WWE to merit this topic.

Discuss the latest ratings, matches, upcoming events, merchandise, whatever - as long as it relates to the current WWE product.

The other thing I wouldn't mind seeing in here is people's reviews. Be it the latest Raw, Smackdown or PPV, or even an individual match. As evidenced by some of the other threads going on here there are a lot of wrestling fans on the UKFF who enjoy writing creatively so here's a little platform to do it if you wish to.

I'm just going to start this thread with a throw-away effort, but if this thread has any legs then I'll be sure to post here regularly.

Ten things I am loving about WWE at the moment (in no particular order).

1) The Royal Rumble is around the corner.

2) Daniel Bryan's heel turn.

3) Wrestlemania is almost upon us.

4) The Rock/Cena - can not wait.

5) R-Truth - I love the character he plays.

6) Kane/Cena - something fresh and rather enjoying it.

7) Foley is back - By no means his biggest fan, but always good to see an old face back on the scene.

8) Undertaker's 'Mania match. A highlight of the past three years, no reason why it can't be four.

9) Dolph Ziggler - Potential to be huge and my favourite wrestler yet to become a legit headliner.

10) CM Punk and Danielson World champs together - Even a couple of years ago I would have said it would never happen.

great thread

first, i've been really enjoying WWE, i always do, it isn't always perfect but there is enough to keep me watching consistently which is all I need. It can only get better going into the Royal Rumble and onto Wrestlemania.

these are the other things I've been enjoying...

- Daniel Bryan, having the time of his life as World Champion putting in great performances on the microphone and in the ring, definately grown more confident in this heelish persona. Can't wait to see where this is going and the question of will he make it to Wrestlemania as Champion?

- Smackdown, it has been a great show for ages now, but nobody seems to watch it. It has a really enjoyable midcard and uppermidcard, Sheamus and Barrett are almost closing in on those Main Event slots, while Cody shines as IC Champion. Then you've got the rest, Drew McIntyre, Hunico, Justin Gabriel, Ted Dibiase, Jinder Mahal and The Uso's. Considering last year when the Draft happened everyone though it would be shit, but its my favourite show on WWE. Don't forget Christian, Orton and Sin Cara are all expected to return early this year.

- The Road To Wrestlemania, always the best time of year, there is much excitement in the air, and it makes me feel like a kid again watching wrestling.

- Chris Jericho and his Jacket, at first I wasn't sure, i didn't like it, but as the silence has gone on, i'm beginning to love it. I can't see for the life of me where its going, but i'm enjoying it.

- Tag Teams, meh i know its still not exactly a focal point, but the fact there are genuine teams, in matching gear wrestling each other is a step in the right direction.

- Brodus Clay, and more specifically there is some fun to the shows (no, most of the comedy isn't that funny) but this means there is balance to the shows which is good for an audience.

things i'm not enjoying so much...

- The Miz, what happened Mike? A year ago, arguable the hottest thing in WWE, always entertaining, but now i'm not really finding him good at all. hes grating on me.

- Zack Ryder, i'm not sure what they can do. The thing that made him likeable and entertaining on Z! True Long Island Story isn't happening in WWE and i'm not enjoying him, putting him with Eve was a duff move, but the Cena/Ryder alliance might be good, but i just don't know, i don't really like him on a WWE screen.

- Commentary, still a problem, less so now but still. Booker is constant hilarity, but it isn't exactly quality. I swear Michael Cole would be fine in the Bobby Heenan role, JUST NOT as the main commentator going "aw, this guy" or "what a goof!" etc. It really can't be helping. Josh Matthews is ok, but he always just strikes you as a small time guy, and Lawlers just been doing his own thing for years.

Re: The Miz. I agree with most of your posts but this one sticks out the most.

Rarely do I have enough time throughout the summer and into the autumn to catch WWE as regularly as I like so I always make sure that I watch it from the beginning of January up until Wrestlemania. This time last year The Miz was red hot and it is a shame to see that his stock and momentum has tailed off as much at it has.

It is ironic looking back at the famous "Hate Me" video package we saw of him at last year's Wrestlemania, as that was what cemented him as a bona fide main eventer in the eyes of many fans and should have been the catalyst for him to have gone on to great things, yet actually did nothing but signal that that was his peak; it has been downhill for him ever since.

The Miz is one of WWE's greatest all rounders and one of the hardest workers on the roster. Let's hope that he gets back to where he was.

Overall, I'm enjoying the tongue-in-cheek aspects of Raw. People have been dismissing the Kane/Cena horror-movie storyline as cheesy, but I've loved it. It's nice to see something which doesn't take itself mega-seriously and clearly Ryder and Cena are enjoying the hell out of themselves.

See also Brodus. I was in a pub which was showing Raw when Clay debuted and everybody in the place loved it. He was over literally 5 seconds after coming out. Much, much better than the generic monster heel we were all expecting.

He's had the match of the night with Batista, Edge, Michaels twice and Triple H. The matches with Batista and Edge were belters.

I thought this as soon as I posted. You're right, he has had phenomenal 'Mania matches for a fair few years running now.

I think he's just lost. There was the brief 3 weeks period where he and R-Truth looked like the most unstoppable force in WWE History until HHH saw to that. Then they apologised for gods sake!

Also to I'd like to add that I dislike, intensely Teddy Long and would like him to go away from Smackdown forever, playa.

^ In my books, general managers should always be heels a la Bischoff, Heyman etc. Sure, face GM's are good for a nice little pop (wrestling booking 101 dictates that after an opening segment featuring a face and a heel, the blue eye GM will come out and put them in the main event, which itself will end in a no-contest/DQ).

Vickie Guerrero was born to play the heel GM role on Smackdown.

I liked pompus Regal GM, he was more of a tweener, but very funny. Long is pointless really, i think Booker could play the face GM well, and as you say, Vicky as the heel.

The thing is though, she's been Assistant GM on Smackdown for a year, Smackdown GM twice for a (the first for a long period of time) and Raw GM for a bit in 2009, I'm sure there's been other short periods that I can't remember the details of where she was GM of Raw for the night as well around 2010. Surely they can't bring her out again? She was unbearable for most of the time, except maybe the Undertaker/Edge feud where their great work made up for it. She hasn't ever gotten the heel reactions because of the content she has taken part in, but because her voice is so loud and annoying, and she just won't go away.

Personally, I think that's a very bad point you make. Vickie is a brilliant heel and the reactions she garners are certainly not solely down to her voice. She's a natural heel and plays the heel GM role with far more conviction than Teddy Long does as a face. As you say, she has had stints in said role before. However, if WWE were to make her the permanent GM then it would be different.

She is a superb character, and as naturally gifted as Dolph Ziggler is, his success so far has been aided in part by Guerrero's contributions.

When she was at the side of Edge, at no point was she outperformed in promos and skits by Edge or anybody else partaking in them - she held her own 100%.

The heel heat she gets is insane for a non-wrestler, and especially for a female. I think the only serious heel heat I've heard that's been louder than that in recent memory was for Cole when he was feuding with Lawler last year.

What a heap of shit. Do you understand why Vickie Guerrero does all of that in her character?

Vickie Guerrero's over exposed enough as it is. If she was the Smackdown GM she'd be unbearable. Vickie was a good heel in 2008. What does she add in 2012? She's done everything on the show, she doesnt get her charge over, she's never on PPV so isn't a money drawing act, she doesn't sell merch and they cant even do fat jokes anymore. She yesterdays news in my opinion. I'm sick to death of her. She's like Karen Angle was in 2007.

Those matches were great, but I was never under the impression Taker would be losing in them. I couldn't tell you about the Batista match as my mate's mum thought it was an opportune moment to ask how my family were as the match kicked off.

The Edge match I remember thinking was good, but never getting into it to the point where I thought Edge could win. I never really bought Edge as a main eventer anyway, so he definitely weren't going to get me into it.

Teddy Long should go and they need to get better commentators. You tend to pick up on what they need to change when you're watching with people who've never seen it. Commentary always stands out as cringe worthy to me when I watch with others. As someone said, Cole is fine in a Heenan role but you need a good straight man - and preferably one who can answer back to Cole rather than give no response so Cole seems right.
